LEED
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was developed by the US Green Building Council to drive forward the Green Building Movement and provide a recognised standard to assess the environmental sustainability of building designs.
LEED is a voluntary standard which encourages the adoption of sustainable design and emphasises strategies across six areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality and innovation in design.
LEED can be used to ensure environmental issues are considered during the design of the building or to show the design has effectively addressed environmental issues, and may be certified as a design by the USGBC. There are four levels of compliance with buildings awarded a score ranging from Certified, through Silver and Gold to Platinum.

The latest version of LEED (LEED V3) was released on 27th April 2009, and while lighting / lighting management is only one component of the LEED system, it can nevertheless be instrumental in achieving at least 8 and as many as 22 points within the framework of the system: a minimum of 26 points is required for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

Beyond LEED – Masdar City
The MASDAR city development has been described by project leaders as "beyond LEED," where an entirely new dimension of sustainable development and construction methods is being employed.
Overall lifetime sustainability was the deciding factor in a Delmatic system being selected for the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology – the first phase of Masdar City. The Delmatic system considers every watt of power and maximises energy efficiency while also enhancing overall sustainability, and minimising the extent of hardware and cabling.
