BREEAM

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) was established by the UK Building Research Establishment to set the standards for best practice in sustainable development, and enable owners, designers and users to review and improve environmental performance throughout the life of a building.

BREEAM is a voluntary standard established in 1990 and updated regularly in line with UK building regulations. BREEAM can be used to assess the environmental impacts of buildings at both the design stage and the post-construction stage and aims to ensure best practice, mitigate the environmental impact of buildings, provide recognition to low impact buildings, provide a credible environmental label, stimulate demand for sustainable buildings, set criteria and standards surpassing those required by regulations and encourage innovation to minimise the environmental impact of buildings.

The latest version of BREEAM released on 1st May 2008 includes stringent requirements for energy and water consumption, encourages genuinely sustainable designs and makes post-construction reviews mandatory. The code also introduces Innovation credits for exemplary performance or application of an 'innovative' feature, system or process.

Performance is assessed across nine categories - Management, Health & Wellbeing, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Waste, Land Use & Ecology, and Pollution. Buildings are awarded a score ranging from Pass, through Good, Very Good, and Excellent to Outstanding.

Delmatic systems offer outstanding energy and operational efficiency and by assisting in sustainable building design enable the achievement of high BREEAM ratings.

Metro systems assist in sustainable design and in the achievement of high BREEAM scores by addressing requirements across a number of the nine categories.
